how do I stop her from buying a pet shop puppy?

Ambie asked:

My friend wants to “rescue” a puppy from a pet shop. I told her not to do it because she will be giving money to the puppy millers but she won’t listen to me. She said there is no way to stop the puppy mills so people might as well keep buying the pet shop puppies to save them.

tell her that if they don’t get money they will stop and the puppies always end up having problems like health my sisters friend bought one and its knees are bad it can’t walk after a year don’t buy a pet shop puppy

she’s not “saving” any dogs that way.

With that kind of attitude.. puppy mills wont stop! They rely on people who want to “save” petshop puppies.. infact its a joke among millers! As long as they make a profit off that pup, they will continue to operate.

Why not try to help her find a pup thru a true rescue.. one that really does need to be saved!

    ADDED
Coley, gentle giants rescue is NOT a reputable rescue!

but then again look at it this way, where will that puppy go if she doesnt get him? im very much against puppy mills but it isnt the puppys fault hes there, he needs a loving home too

    Take her to
She can rescue any puppy starting there.

Tell her that by NOT buying the puppy from the pet shop, she will be saving more dogs than she is by getting the one at the store.

Explain to her that it isn’t “saving” a puppy.. since once that puppy is gone, another will come from a puppy mill to take its place. It’s like a never ending cycle.

I know pups are pet stores are tempting, and trust me, I have been tempted to “save” them from those tiny little cages myself.

Take her to the shelter, show her there are dogs there that desperately need saved.

Also, explain to her the health risks and the expenses these puppy mill pups have. Explain to her that a mutt or a purebred in the shelter already comes fixed, UTD on shots, microchipped, etc. etc.

Also, explain to her that 9 times out of 10, a mutt does not have the health risks of a pure bred dog.

If she has her heart set on a purebred, they have those at the shelter too! Also, they have breed specific rescues EVERYWHERE… which is where 2 of my 3 dogs came from.

puppy mills are terrible, yes, but it is not the sad, petstore puppys fault. i completely understand people wanting to buy from a petstore. puppies that come from puppy mills are just as sad as a lot of dogs that are up for adoptions at a humane society. let her do what she wants.

There’s no such thing as “rescuing” a puppy from the pet store, they’re always purchased and never put to death. It’s too bad that she won’t listen to you. You could tell her that she could adopt a puppy from a shelter for 1/3rd the price of a pet store puppy. If she goes online to petfinder.com. She can do a search for the specific breed, age, gender she wants for her dog.

Also, you should have her watch an episode of Animal Cops: Miami, Houston or Detroit, so she can understand how many animals are out there for adoption and who are way more grateful to find a happy home than a puppy mill dog.

Her attitude is pretty awful. If you told her not to buy drugs would she say “drug dealers would still be selling them so I might as well keep buying them?” I think there are definitely two types of dog owners though. Those that believe in rescuing and adopting dogs and those that would rather just buy them. I think the only reason ever to buy a dog is if you’re breeding them or showing them, but I would never do that.

You could also tell her that pure breds usually don’t live as long as mixed breeds and have more health problems, so will probably cost her more money throughout its life than a shelter dog would.

Anyway, you may be fighting an uphill battle. Good luck.

buy the puppy, then get out there and protest puppy mills! Get involved, get them shut down!

That is the most ignorant thing I’ve ever heard.

First off, you should definitely let her see all of these responses so she knows how idiotic she’s being. It is the people just like her that keep puppy mills in business.

If she wants to spend that much on a dog, why not buy from a responsible breeder?? That will probably end up saving her lots of money (vet bills) and heartache down the road.

Have her watch some videos. Show her what she’s doing to the PARENTS of these pet store puppies, the dogs that have to stay in the mills and keep up with the “demand.”

God, I just started tearing up…. if she can watch that with a straight face, slap her.

    Ahhh noooo!
    Save one from a shelter!!!
That is sooo stupid and she’ll end up with a dog that could have health defects and all the dogs that i know that were from pet stores were stupid and timid :/
Show her the better puppies she can get from reputable breeders and the local animal shelter!!!

Here is a very simple explanation:
Tell her that when a pet store buys a puppy, they purchase it from the puppy mill for about $100. In order for the miller to make money, they have to produce a lot of puppies so they can sell them in quantity for this price. When you raise hundreds of puppies, they get no love or attention. When the puppy mill person gets paid, it goes into THEIR pockets for all the nice things they want to buy. Nothing but the absolute basics (food) goes back into the dogs.
So in the end, she is not “rescuing” a puppy at all. She is helping to end the life of the mother. The money she pays for that puppy means that it’s mother gets to continue living in a cramped, filthy cage without any love, attention, quality food, grooming, proper exercise and maybe not even seeing daylight. Mom gets to keep producing one litter after another until she dies and is taken outside and dumped into a pile with the other dead dogs.
Ask her if she can live with that thought every time she looks at her “rescued” puppy.

Tell her to go to a Humane Society, where she is honestly rescuing a puppy. I don’t count petstore puppies as “rescued” ones. Please tell her to get one from the Humane Society, it makes me sick when someone gets them from petstores!
And please tell her to support a no-kill shelter, where they don’t euthanize any animals!
