What would you do in the pet shop where two budgies are being separated by a customer?

Akira asked:

Last week it was the last day of sale “$10 off for a budgie” in a pet shop. There were only 2 left in the cage. When I saw them, they were sleeping close to each other. Suddenly, a customer came and a staff snatched one of them and put it in a brown paper bag. The one left in the cage screamed and flew frantically in circles. The staff tried to persuade the customer to take both. The customer refused, saying she only needed one budgie because she already has one at home. The two budgies in the cage were together for 3 months already. Nothing could persuade the customer to take the one left in the cage. After the customer paid and left, I stayed for a while and watched the remaining budgie. For at least 15 minutes, it was chirping, flying and bumping its body against all directions of the cage.

oh wow that’s sad. but don’t beat yourself up over it. there was nothing you could do to stop it. well nothing that wouldn’t have gotten you arrested anyway! :-)

That’s terrible! I guess in this case, you probably can’t do anything about it, short of persuading the woman to let you buy both budgies (which I’m guessing you had no intention of doing).

I would have refused to sell her the single bird…you dont HAVE to make a sale just because someone wants to buy…especially not when the health and well-being of an animal is at stake…what a terriby person she was to even think to do that!

    Put it to sleep.

The budgie will adjust don’t worry. Don’t get me wrong–they enjoy the companionship–but would be just as happy with a mirror. I think it is sweet that you are concerned.

you couldve either let it adjust by itself or paid for the guy to take both

You didn’t think the pet shop would CARE at all, did you? Pet shops are there to make money. Bottom line. They don’t give a hoot if the last bird was injuring itself out of fear. They don’t care if the pair was separated. I feel badly for the birds, and for the people who shop at pet stores. Money isn’t everything to me, but it sure is to a petstore!

The bird was probably upset at the way the staff grabbed the bird.

I have never heard of putting a bird in a paper bag , that sounds bad.

The remaining bird will be fine in a few hours when it calms down . .
