I don’t want to seem terrible or dreadful or Hiter-like but what do I do? I’ve only got the time to take care of one cat. My flatmate is threatening to dump them all onto the street. The pet shop doesn’t want them and they refuse to give a refund. I’ve only adopted it for a week and when I brought it for checkups, I get a whole litter. But thing is – the pet shop kills the cats when they aren’t sold in a few weeks.
sell them back to the pet shop
depending on where you live you can consider two options –
1) let the cat have her kittens and when the kittens have been weaned (between 6-8 weeks) find all the kittens homes by the 8th week (no sooner so they can learn all the cat socialization and potty habits). After the kittens have found homes then sterilize your cat.
2) ask a vet to abort the kittens while sterilization your cat.
Personally, I would take the first option.
Give them to the spca but make sure the spca you give them to doesnt kill the kitties they cant find homes for because some do and some dont.
Are you certain that it wasn’t Buy-One-Get-One-Free ?
you could call the humane society. they dont euthanize cats supposedly. the ASPCA i think does in a matter of days not even an entire week, so its kinda of risky to take them there.
Contact your local Animal Haven. Animal Havens usually are no kill shelters. You are going to have to wait until they are at least 6 weeks old.
When the cat has the kittens sell them to a pet store or give them to close friends. Technically the pet store has to tell you when an animal is pregnant. Just sell them on the street to trustworthy people or something.
jeeze where do you live? its animal cruelty! jus sell them or give them away for free to someone else tht wants cats…
I would definately report the store to who ever will listen. Rescue groups, business groups, regulations, etc. As for the poor girl and her *****. If you can handle 6-8 weeks of kitties, let her have them and then run an add or post signs for free kittens. You could even do this a week or two before they are ready to go and let folks pick out what they want and put a little band on their leg for pick up when they are ready. Kittens and puppies are the easiest to give away.
If your flat mate dumps them on the street thats animal cruelty and there will be a hefty fine and or jail time so I would advise that you dissuade them from that course of action.
You have some alternatives:
1/ let the cat have her kittens (keep her inside!) get some advice from the vet in 6 – 8 weeks you can take them to a local shelter for adoption. Get the cat spayed at the vets.
2/ take the cat to the vets abort the kittens and get the cat spayed (many vets will refuse to do this on ethical grounds)
3/ Rehome the cat. Take her to a shelter explain the situation and adopt a cat from the shelter (who will be spayed / nutered)
4/ Get the cat to a shelter and dont get another until you are in a position to care for it. This is the harshest option but you said you “only have time for one cat” and your flat mate doesnt seem like the careing type. Hey its just one option.
5/ Get a compasionate friend to house the mother and kittens untill they are weaned to go to a new home. Take your kitty home at the end of it and get her spayed asap.
Theres 5 options its up to you as this cat is totally dependant on you. You arent dreadful or ****** like just put in a difficult position. Option 1 or 4 seem like your best options here (I’m guessing you are wanting 1 more)
I hope this resolves well hon. All the best ^_^
sell them or give them to friends or family that would like or need a pet. theres nothing you can do the cat can’t have an abortion . think as it that youve been given this as a gift for a reason. but dont put there lives at risk – maybe get hold af a cat protection site
I would be a little ticked off if I had bought a animal at a pet store and found it to be pregnant.
The pet store sounds a bit dodgy, and I would most certainly contact the local animal shelter, RSPCA or other, for their advice and support. Or you could speak to your local council and see what they say or advise. I wonder how they “kill” the cats/kittens that have not been sold within a few weeks? One would hope humanely, and this is a whole other issue which may need to be investigated.
Surely any reputable pet store have their pets vet checked prior to being put on display? There maybe a legal expectation of them to sell their pets, in good health and not be pregnant etc, (you may need to check laws).
I would be inclined to say to the pet store that there is an expectation, when selling animals that they are healthy and not pregnant, and give them an ultimatum that they either pay for the cat to be de-sexed and or other vet fees, or you will report their dodgy practices to the local newspaper, which will result in them loosing business. Especially if they do not have any thing in writing stating you don’t have any recall.
Dumping the kittens on the streets only increases the chances of them being abused and having unwanted kittens themselves, thus creating a vicious circle, so pass them onto a animal shelter, who will either put them down humanely or de-sex them before re-homing.
I wish you luck and hope that the store does the right thing by you.
Honest answer? I would take her to the vet to get her spayed so long as she isn’t too far along in her pregnancy.
It sounds harsh but it seems this would be the lesser of the two evils, Aborting kittens or having kittens who have no where to go and could potentially end up unwanted.
You could try a local shelter but depending where you are this could be just as bad a scenario for the kittens.
