Hi there!

I actually used to work at the humane society in MD, and I would definitely say get a cat from there! Make sure however that the cat is up-to-date on all of its age appropriate shots (most humane societies do this) and if it is not already spayed or neutered get a HASP certificate from them. Usually when you adopt a cat or dog from a humane society they include a certificate that can be used with almost any vet that covers the cost of a spay or neuter. Also, they will do an exit exam before you take the cat home just to check and make sure everything is ok but they will most likely tell you about URI before you take your new bundle of joy home. URI is an upper respiratory infection (a fancy term for a cold) and is something a lot of animals that come to the humane society are sick with, but most of the time they cannot treat it until they know they are sick. Sometimes symptoms come up after the animal is adopted and taken home. Keep your eyes peeled for a runny nose, congestion, watery eyes and loss of appetite. It would be good idea to take your cat to the vet as soon as possible just to get a check up and get your veterinarian introduced to your new cat. Hope this helps! :)

I got a cat from the shelter for about sixty dollars. He is the coolest cat I have ever owned. Plus I saved hi life,He was going to be put down in 48 hours. There are so many beautiful kittens and cats in the animal shelter and they come with food and a certificate for a free spay or newter. The only problem is,is to have to choose just one.

I would definently get one at the humane society! Because these kitties definently need homes. But kitties at pet shops need homes too. But the humane society is probably a lot cheaper and best idea.
