How much money is spent when preparing for a puppy, not including the puppy itself?

Alyssa R asked:

I have summed up my prices to be about $300 for all the puppy things, not including the puppy itself. Plus I have a $250 rent deposit for my apartment complex. How long after receiving a puppy, 8-14 weeks old, will my expenses be cut down to only routine vaccines and emergency care? I am getting a black lab or yorkie. ( Both standard, no toys or teacups, lol) Any excess advice please feel free to share.

The first few months will be a little more because of the vaccinations. Some need two or three boosters, but by the time they are 12 or 14 weeks, they should have all of them and then you will be on yearly check ups with the vet. Also, don’t forget food and obedience classes.

Black lab or Yorkie? That’s two HUGELY different breeds.

I have to say, that now is not the right time. I recommend waiting until you are in a stable home and have $2500 saved up for emergencies.

A pet-friendly apartment is great, but what happens if you have to move, can no longer afford it, or are asked to leave? Yorkies are barky and labs can be noisy as well if not given 2 hours of exercise a day.

The puppy shots are generally done by 16 weeks.

If you are going ahead with it, be sure that you are either rescuing or using a responsible breeder. will help you recognize a good or bad breeder.

    Either way, GL with puppy.

That depends a great deal! Of course you’ll need food, toys, a bed, dishes, collar, leash, possibly training pads, a crate, pet taxi, etc.
Once you get it there are the vaccines and getting the dog fixed. You’ll need monthly flea and heartworm meds too. I’m assuming those are things you thought about with your $300 estimate.

I would also take into consideration damages. Puppies LOVE to chew, and even if he has a bunch of chew toys he may still destroy shoes, furniture, or any number of things around your house. They are rambunctions and have been know to knock things over and break everything from glass in a picture frame, dishes, or even chairs and people! Puppies also have accidents, so you’ll need supplies to properly clean up his messes, and some things that get “soiled” are just unable to be kept.

Honestly, food, treats, toys, flea/heartworm meds and vet visits are an ongoing expense no matter what age your dog is. Don’t forget the time and energy you’ll need to put into training and playing with him as well.

    Hope that helps! Good luck!

When my girlfriend left and took our dog, she told me to make a list of how much I spent on the dog from the time we bought him at four months old (feb 23rd) up until when she left (Sept 30th). It was over $2000, and that doesn’t include the few times she paid for vet appointments, food and other sutff when she went to get it alone or she decided to pay.

    So be prepared….

For me when i adopted a 9 week old puppy:
Crate- $92 + $40 (rounded for a large breed- actually 2 one when she was a small puppy and one that she is in now)
    Leash- $12-$15
Collar- (since she was a growing puppy, i’ve had 3-4) $10 each
Pet Deposit- $200 (make sure your apartment does not have breed size restrictions) if you get a lab
    Pooper scooper- $25
Bed- $25-90 depends on size- sucks
Dog Food- $40 every 3 weeks
    Food & Water Bowl- $25
Toys- also teething toys $50-$150 easily
    Toothbrush and paste- $5-$10
    Grooming Supplies- $10-$25

Thats what i had to prep for before i even got the pup and the vet visits:
    Approximately $650…
Also you need to register your dog with your city- tags, rabies vaccination proof tag, etc.

    good luck
