Animal Cruelty/BBB/Pet Store regulations. Please?
Kaylin asked:
My boyfriend works at a pet store, Pets Barn, they claim they are discount pet supplies but they cost just as much as Petco or Petsmart or any of the other big petstore chains. Anyways, their back wall small animals, birds & reptiles, basically, there is a big problem in my eyes & any other animal lovers that go in and see it. I don’t know the dimensions of the cages but the rabbits, there is always atleast 6 of them & all the way up to 10 of them!
The cage is WAY smaller then;

I never said much becuase they were sold quickly but then more were bought as soon as a few were sold. Along with the over-crowded rabbit cage (Which only has a food bowl and some hay….no chew toys, home, tubes, anything), there is always, i don’ tknow, 15 mice to every 1 wheel so they are always fighting over it and getting their legs stuck in the spokes
So, what is everyone’s opinion on what I should do? I’ve talked to my boyfriend about it and he does what he can (sneaks in toys, extra wheels, snacks/treats) but they are always taken out. It’s now been 2 months with 9 rabbits including 2 full grown lop ears and 7 growing bunnies and no one has bought any and as a mommy to 2 rabbits I know how much room they need and how they turn out if they aren’t in good conditions for a long period of time. What should I do? Take pictures and send them to tthe BBB? Report them to who? help! I feel so bad, I even asked the manager if I could buy a big cage and take like 5 of them out and put them in it but he told me not to worry about it.
I already stopped shopping there, I go to visit my boyfriend and handle the animals becuase they are NEVER let out of the cage or picked up or played with or anything.

There is really only one effective thing you can do. Don’t shop there, at all. Organize all your friends to do the same and tell them to tell their friends to do the same. Maybe hand out leaflets or put signs on bulletin boards stating what you say here. As long as people shop in the store things will continue as they are.

Oh.. you should SAY SOMETHING to the manager… I “accidently” let the puppies out of their cages in my mall’s pet store.. little pug and beagle running all over the store.. LMAO funny. Anyways.. tell the manager that if he doesn’t do something about the shoddy living conditions for them.. that you’ll call the SPCA.. or.. boycotting/loud protests outside the store are good.

what u can do is contact ur local humane society 2 have them go out & check the living conditions 4 the animals. if there is anything wrong with the living conditions the humane society will take care of it. or if they tell u thats not their deparment, ask them if they can point u in the right direction. u can also contact the dept of agriculture and make a complaint with them. pet stores do get evaluated so many times a year by the dept of argiculture. the dept inspects all the small animals, chinchillas, ferrets, etc, & the birds. so u can try there first.
