I’d expect $500 for start up. Including vet care & supplies. Another $1200+ for the dog from a responsible breeder, or $200 for a rescue puppy.

From there, at least $1000 a year + another potentially $2500 for emergencies.

We spent over $2500 in the first year of our puppy’s life because she broke her leg. 3-4 surgeries later and several urgent vet visits, all before the age of 1. And, we got her at 7 months! So technically, that was $2500 in her first 4 months with us!

    LOTS.
Between getting mine, shotted, spayed, regular checkups, food, crate, toys, training treats, I’ve estimated to have spent over $2000 since I’ve gotten her.

    $250 to get her spayed
    $60 per vet visit
    $20-150 each time for shots
    $65 dog license
    $70 crate
    $100 obedience training
    ~$200 in carpet cleaning
    $35-60 a month for food
$20 a month for treats and toys
$20 a month for heartworm meds & flea prevention

and not to mention if they get ill…

if you have to ask, then you can’t afford one.

To estimate the exact costs, we’ll need a little bit more information.

From “puppy” to what age? 1 year, 18 month, lifetime costs… ?

The average cost of a dog for it’s lifetime is about $8,000. And this does not include any major medical expenses that they might have, or the cost of the dog.

In the first year that we got our dog, with the cost of the dog, supplies, vet vistis, neuter and what not, it was close to $3500.

You need to call vets in your area and price them out. Depends a lot on the breed and if you’re paying full spay neuter price or getting that partially paid for by humane society, etc…. If you have a male or female, etc…

My dog = 120 for spay (she’s big), 130 for shots (with 3 yr rabies vaccine last time) and checkup + heartworm.

I live in Michigan and use a country vet who doesn’t overcharge – he’s been my vet for 20+ yrs. When I lived in Indianapolis, it cost a lot more to own a dog. My license fee is only $15 a yr, so that is cheap too.

400-500 – vet care and supplies initially
400-1200- the puppy itself depending on the breed and the Breeder
1000-3000 regular vet visits and food
    1000-4000 – emergency vet visits.

You’ll need to spend roughly about 2,000 or more per year. (on everything)
Not to mention you need to put aside a few thousand just in case she needs to be rushed to the ER.

    One Time Expenses
    Spaying or Neutering: Dog: $200
    Initial Medical Exam: Dog: $70
    Collar or Leash: Dog: $30
    Crate: Dog: $95
    Carrying Crate: Dog: $60
    Training: Dog: $110
Total One Time Costs: Dog: $565

    Annual Expenses
    Food: Dog: $120
    Annual Medical Exams: Dog: $235
    Toys and Treats: Dog: $55
    License: Dog: $15
    Health Insurance: Dog: $225
    Miscellaneous: Dog: $45
    Total Annual Costs: Dog: $695

Total First Year Pet Ownership Costs: Dog: $1,260
of course this could be more depending on where you live and the vet you see, and emergencies the pet may have..

    My dog costs;

    Dog £280 / $560

    Puppy classes £30 / $60

Vet bills on vaccines £40 / $80 (per year)

    Toys £50 / $100 (one a month for a year)

Food £100 to £500 / $200 to $1000 (depending on size and quality)

Vet check up £15 / $30 (though this varies)

Cleaning bills, replacements or damaged items etc £100ish / $200

Crates, bowls, gates, pens, other stuff that is needed, depending on situation £100 / $200

There are tons of other costs that I haven’t even thought of
    So a puppy up to it’s first year £715 to £1000 / $1500 to $2000

And thats if your dog hasn’t gotten itself hurt, then include £10 to £20 / $40 a month on insurance or whatever vet fees cost.
