Flubs asked:
Hi, I’m a long term kitty lover and have always had moggys around the house.
I’m interested in getting a Birman as a pet and have been researching different breeders. Seems that the asking price is pretty consistent but some say they will provide papers and some say they won’t.
What’s the point of pedigree papers? Should you buy a purebred without papers, especially when forking out a few hundred bucks for the kitty?

Yes, you should always receive papers. If a “breeder” does not have papers, then you are dealing with a “backyard breeder” who will gladly take your money and perhaps sell you a less than healthy cat.
Here’s an article about buying Maine Coons, but the info will apply to any breed that you might find helpful.
good luck!
Absolutely if you are getting it from a breeder and paying for a pure breed, if not you are getting ripped off by a backyard breeder or kitty or puppy mill. Don’t buy from anyone who won’t give you registration papers.
Yes you should be given papers showing parentage as proof that your cat is a pedigree as that is exactly what it means if you ever want to breed your cat you may need these or in fact if for some untold reason you had to part with the kitty then you also will need to prove this which can only be done with papers however if you dont wish to do any of the above and purly want a pet and are prepared to except one or two little imperfections then why worry. :)
You need the papers. It’s a morbid reason why but here goes:
Usually pure-breds have issues. You need these papers to get a refund if your pet somehow dies. That way you can get a replacement. Also, this helps determine what kind of cat you have. It is a promise as there are SO MANY breeds out there.
Answer Mine Please:
You should get a registration slip or “blue slip” – depending on registry. Blue slip is a term for the kitten slip that allows you to choose the name yourself & mail it in for the formal/final registration slip. You should also get a copy of the pedigree.
A registration slip is proof of ownership. Unless the seller has a good excuse for not giving it to you (adult cat, part of breed rescue – already altered or co-owned adult & chasing down signatures) You most definitely should get registration & pedigree.
I give this even if placing a retired adult GC,RW or former breeding animal for as little as $150.
Always make sure you get papers even if you don’t intend to show your cat. It verifies that the breeder is legitimate and not just breeding sub-standard pedigrees for a quick profit.
