Matt asked:
I have been thinking about applying a pet store. I have been working at an animal shelter for the past 2 months, but I get the impression that they look down at buying animals from pet shops. I understand to an extent, though the pet shop goes far beyond cats and dogs that most animal shelters just offer, not to mention pet supplies. Should I apply at a pet shop? Is there anything I should know? I’ve heard some things about the ethics.
It’s a local pet shop. Here’s the website. http://www.aquariapets.com/ They even claim that they are a proud supporter of the shelter I volunteer at, which I also don’t plan on quitting. You know, unless I move or something, but then I’ll probably find another shelter.

Sure why not. Were do you get pet supplies? Surely not @ the shelter. I have a cat from a shelter one from a pet store and a dog from ………..well we got him free but they are all good pets. If you do apply I am a firm beleiver in Petsmart!

I work at a petstore and love it. I do NOT support pet stores that sell dogs or cats (exclused some PetSmarts for they have cat adoptions in store). If you think it’s something you’d like to do, go for it.
Make sure you are able to lift 50 pounds, and you should know at least a little about dogs, cats, birds, small animals, reptiles, and fish.
Be able to know all the products that you sell. So many times I have people coming up and asking me questions on products…whether they can’t find it, can’t remember the name, or want to know information about it

Work at the pet store this is a respectable job and you will learn allot about pets… Lifting is part of the job..
But a nice job indeede…

Ask someone on staff at the pet store what they do, and what they like and dislike about their job.
If you apply at the pet store, you will have an opportunity to ask questions about the job at the interview.
In the meantime, don’t quit your job at the shelter, and keep quiet about your applications at the pet store until you get an offer in writing and accept it. If you don’t like the pet store (or don’t get hired), you still have a job at the shelter.

It doesn’t hurt to apply and talk to the people at the pet shop. It’s your decision in the long run and you can always turn down the job if you don’t feel like it’s the right place for you to work.

I think it’s cool you’re thinking it through like this.
I’d say go for it. At best, you’ll find a job you love and you might even feel some reassurance about the way they treat pets (nothing is ever as black and white as the internet makes it seem, altho I too question the ethics of some of these folks).
And if it doesn’t turn out like that, you’ll have had an interesting experience and might be able to shed some light on the problems you encountered.
Best of luck.

Petsmart is a good choice if you have one in your area, as they don’t sell dogs or cats. Instead they work with rescue organizations to adopt out animals that need homes.

Definitely. :)
I just started working at Petsmart, and it’s definitely a more rewarding job than working at a fast-food place or other retail store. I care for the animals, and it’s so fun to get to interact with them every day when I feed/water/clean their cage. The rats are especially sweet. :] Not to mention the fact that lots of customers bring in their doggies, so I get to pet and play with lots of animals throughout the day. & I sometimes play with the kitties who come from the shelters.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you don’t do WORK. You’ll be dealing with all kinds of poop, dirt, pee, bedding, cleaning cages, dead fish, etc. Stocking the shelves and such will probably be something you do, as well.
At my store we VERY RARELY get a dead small animal, so that’s not really a problem for me.
If you need a job, a pet store is a great idea. You still work, but there’s fun in between. :) Just check out the pet stores in your area. See if they’re clean, bright. Look at the animals and see how well they’re taken care of. If they appear active, clean, their eyes are alert.. apply! :]
EDIT: Judging only by their website, I think that store appears to be a good one. The owners appear very involved and they seem to genuinely love animals. If you’ve been inside and the animals have appeared well cared for, and the employees care about the animals, you should do it! Nothing better than getting paid to do something you like.
