I recently bought what i thought was an old, fat, depressed MALE chinchilla, turns out its a young pregnant FEMALE chinchilla. this is the second time i have bought an animal from this pet store and it has been pregnant and not male. last time it was a rabbit and i was told ‘it couldnt have happend, not possible’. well it wasnt my husband so it MUST have occurred there.
i bought the chinchilla to be a companion to my three year old sons male chinchilla. i need to remove him from the cage soon or he will impergnante the female again right after birth. i cannot get him neutered as no clinics in lethbridge will do it.
can the pet store be held accountable in any way? possibly supplying me with a cage for the male, or supplies for the baby? i do not want to return her as my son is very attatched already. i plan to keep the baby, thats not the issue. i have emailed the company twice with no reply.

In a perfect world, yes they should be and they should help you with they supplies. But since they can claim human error, the most they would really have to do is allow you to return the animal, which they would probably prefer anyway since they would stand to make a profit from selling the baby.

Yes the pet store must refund your money for miss representing the animals ***. Any babies that the animal had you can also make them take. You must be able to prove they miss represented the animal or that the animal got pregnant during the time it was at the store.
Best to just tell the store you would like to exchange it or get a store discount, that way you wont have to go to court. Most pet stores want to keep your business, and cheap animal is not as much as they can be making from all the food and accessories you buy from them.

Short of hiring a lawyer and going to court over it, if they won’t return your e-mails there may not be a lot you can do. You could write articles to your local newspaper or picket in front of the store. I would certainly stop using them if they are that unreliable. However, if you are keeping the animals and there were no actual damages, you might have a hard time convincing them to do anything. Give it a shot, though. Go back to the store and speak with the manager; see if they’re willing to accomodate you. Good luck!

The store can’t be forced to take in any babies produced, unless you go through a legal system (and then would you really want them to have any babies anyway if they’re husbandry is less than satisfactory) but you could certainly get in touch with their manager and have a really good moan at them. If you do this you should at least be able to get some extra supplies for your chins, or perhaps a discount of a cage – but it is very much down to the managers discression – and to be honest you tend to find you’ll get less from a small one owner shop then you will from a chain store (as the chain stores normally have policies or procedures already in place).
Have a check in store, if they do not have signs up saying they cannot guarantee the *** of their animals then you could mention this, as if it was sold guarantee’d male and it is a female they’ve left themselves open to liability there.
Also it could be worthwhile contacting your local agency and reporting them, it may not do anything in the long run but at least voice your concerns over this stores inexperiences with animals – if they can’t *** them who knows if they know what to advise people who are buying them?

They most likely will not do anything. I’ve heard of this happening many times before.
For the kit; you’re going to have to get a baby-proof cage and a gram scale to monitor the weight. They need to be gaining a couple grams a day.
Is the mothers milk in yet? you may need to handfeed.

The best thing to do is figure out how to tell genders for yourself before buying animals from a pet store, or get one from a breeder.
Good luck
