What do pet shops do with animals they can’t sell?
Maria K asked:
Would they get turned into shelters? What would happen to the pets that are already in shops if people stopped buying them?

the one buy my house just knocks the price down. They keep doing that until someone finally buys the puppy.
Candace
they wait until someone buys them.

In our pet shop- it’s a chain of pet shops in the UK- we either keep them on sale at full price or put them in the adoption centre where people can donate whatever price they see fit.
PEOPLE.
Stop with the ‘FACT’ thing.
None of the pets in Pets At Home- UK chain of pet shops- end up being put to sleep for no reason OR sold to research labs.
In pets at home, we either keep an animal on sale at full price or, if we need the cage, we name them and transfer them to the adoption centre, where new owners name a price, and all the money goes to chariety.
If you’re speaking how it’s done in a certain shop, SAY IT. It’s not fair to say ‘THIS HAPPENS IN ALL PET SHOPS’, or to imply it does.

They would probably get put on the loose or taken to the pound where all lost animals go. or even if some pets are lucky enough to go to animal rescuers like dogs trust or something!

Research Labs buy them…..it’s a very sad ending.

They go from Full Price to Sale Price, then Discount Price, then to the Adoption Centers.
If nobody at the Adoption Centers take them, they may be put down.
Sad, but true… sorry!
EDIT- I’m speaking about how this is done in the US. If you’re elsewhere, my answer may not apply.

In the pet store that I work in we just go on taking care of them. It’s our job to do so. The animals don’t get put down, and they don’t get adopted out. We just hope that someone will come along that wants to buy them and will take good care of them.
Personally I spoil the ones that don’t get sold.

idk

i know that they dont do anything but try and get people to take them by lowering prices down

Um… most of them would probably be put to sleep :(
Or put into a shelter.

Depends on the animal and the pet store..
Animals that don’t have to be babies to have people interested in them usually just stay till they’re sold, though the price may be discounted to try to draw more interest. Some animals that would fall under that category are reptiles, birds and some of the small furry animals that look just as cute as adults- gerbils, hamsters, mice-etc..
Some animals though just do not sell well in a pet store past a certain age, like puppies, kittens and rabbits in particular will probably be dealt with differently and that varies by pet shop. I know with rabbits some pet stores will have a contract with the original breeder that takes them back after a certain point. Usually though, discounting the price significantly is enough to get them sold. Other then that though, it varies by pet store and goes anywhere from dropping them off at the local kill shelter, selling/giving them to employees, or offering them free in the paper.
Obviously though, the pet store wants to lose as little money as possible, so discounted pricing is the most likely option.
If people quit buying from pet stores, then pet stores would quit buying pets to sell. Any already there would probably be kept and discounted or returned to the original breeder..
For most species, it would be better to buy from the breeder anyways. They understand the species a lot better and can give you more detailed information then a pet shop employee can. When someone is working in a pet shop and housing 30+ species chances are they only really know the care well for a couple of them, yet they will offer advice for all of them. That’s why you see so many people with pets they can’t care for as frequently they trust the advice of someone that gives them inaccurate information about an animal. Let’s say somebody buys an iguana under the pretense that it’s easy to care for and will only need an aquarium and heat lamp. Wrong! It will need over a 6 foot cage, plenty of uv lighting, heat lamps a specialized diet AND most adult iguanas **** being handled. If people knew that, then only a few people would buy them.
I’m still not for banning pet stores as there are quite a few good pet stores that dispense quality information and require that you have appropriate housing for an animal. However, it’s better for everyone involved to either adopt from a shelter or purchase directly from a responsible breeder.
