Ann

Pet shops for the most part have the tanks setup with a centralized filter and water replacement system. So even though the tank appears to be small imagine it as a giant tank with dividers. The water is also being changed constantly through this system. Figure every time someone buys a fish water is taken out to be bagged with the fish you bring home. So the system is constantly adding new water in the tanks as well as taking some out.

Hamza

In pet stores, the fish are in temporary housing, they have enormous filters in the back, the tanks get cleaned twice weekly (in general), and, they don't really care if the fish die (in general).

Nosoop4u

By the way, the average fish holding tank in a pet store is less than 10 gallons.

Lena

usually pet stores have super filtration and maintenance every night after closing. some also don't feed or feed very little so the fish create less waste and less food is in the tank to rot.

Reginald

they circulate the water. they use these pumps to move the water around... thats why the fish are usually sick =( the disease spreads to other tanks. they also always have their filters on 24/7 =D its kinda tiring for the poor fishies tho

Tommy

Fish stores store there fish like that because it is "temporary housing." Most fish stores are bunk anyway. It's cruel. With guppies and goldfish, they are usually sold as feeder fish, so they don't really worry about there well being. If you ask me, its plain wrong. I don't know if you are, but if you are looking into buying some fish, do research on the best fish store in your area. One tip, if the pet store sells fish that are dyed, they definitely aren't worth another look. Good luck.

Rey

because they are holding tanks. they couldn't possibly make the tanks big enough it would be almost impossible. that is why so many fish die all the stress of being over crowed and all. it isn't healthy but not much can be done. when we buy it is like rescuing the fish.

Jaydin

it may look like its only ten gallons, but it might go into the wall or something...

otherwise, talk to the manager at the store and ask them why they do that...maybe for cost reasons, maybe for space reasons...who knows...some people are just stupid...
